Kieron Jina presents THE RISE in Glasgow. The artistic focus of this “professional troublemaker” moves between post-colonial historiography and queer storytelling – always with an activist aspect and in search of empathy and shared experiences. Jina combines costumes and practices with Afro-futurist and cultural clichés to create new perspectives. Jina’s interdisciplinary work includes research, dance, performance, and drag. Jina deliberately involves the audience in their pieces as they energetically roam through culture and history. THE RISE explores ideas related to national borders, finding love, changing seasons, and cultivating healing rituals through various archival stories, sounds, and music. Research-based indigenous practices have shown that we can share, heal, and teach our experiences through storytelling methods and the environment we encounter.
Kieron Jina is a nomadic non-binary professional troublemaker - multidisciplinary artist, facilitator/researcher of creative processes, and academic. Jina has an MA degree in Art from Wits University, Johannesburg. Working primarily in the realms of dance, performance art, visual art, theatre-making, and conscious Djing and with a background in film, Jina's creations include Afrofuturism, migration, climate, gender affirmations, new technology, Indigenous cultural practices, site-specific performance, and interdisciplinary creative practices. Jina has also won multiple awards and artistic residencies that lead to solo and collaborative performances and art creations in South Africa, Brazil, Germany, Austria, France, Reunion Island, Nigeria, Tanzania, South Korea & Switzerland.
