Residency work title - Niki's Masks of Neurofemininity

Niki will develop her ‘Masks of Neurofemininity’ – a cabaret series that plays with cultural tropes of neurodivergent femininity. Niki morphs into The Hysteric, The Dunce, The Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) adopting masks to tear it apart and imagine something anew. For her residency, Niki will explore The MPDG – a pixie-like alien that bounces between manic hyperactivity and inattentive dreaminess, freshly landed on Earth and seeking to spread some joy.

About the artist
Hot mess! Headcase! Heathen!Niki is a hyperactive, hypersensitive vessel of neurodivergent femininity inspired by womxn, femmes and queers, and is an embodiment of grotesque burlesque. Through dance, lip-sync, intense theatricality, and humorous absurdity, Niki’s burlesque embodies and reclaims neurodivergent qualities stigmatised in womxn, and bites back with pleasure, joy, and unashamedness.”

About the programme
Earlier this year, Studio Somewhere put a call out for submissions to our Spring 2024 Studio Somewhere residency programme. We had four residencies available for artists based in Scotland. The residencies are opportunities for artists working in experimental performance to put an idea in motion or explore a new collaboration. We were looking for artists who wished to explore projects that raise interesting new questions relevant to our time, or innovative in approach to form.
