Still Lives is a performance-installation series that captures (with ropes) significant moments or movement in relation to specific cultural contexts. Each edition of Still Lives is a durational, site-responsive and context-specific process of binding cultural objects in their place.
For Glasgow, Still Lives enters the charged world of professional wrestling, a scene with deep local roots and fiercely loyal fans. The artists will lean into the city’s appetite for drama and physical theatre, exploring energy and inertia, movement and pause, kayfabe and the suspension (quite literally) of disbelief.
The artists use the traditional Japanese shibari rope technique, historically used for restraint, and in this work recognised for its aesthetic and sculptural qualities. Collaborating with local wrestlers, they will re-stage the high drama and choreography of the ring, tying up their bodies mid-tackle and suspending them above the mat.
The performance will be soundtracked live by Huntress: expect goth-metal textures, pulsing techno and strange, beautiful noise.
Collaborators
Jake Lawless
Hailing from The Smuggler's Trail, Night City, he is one half of two-time ICW Tag Team Champions, Arcade Violence (alongside Brody Turnbull), Jake Lawless will step into the ring with the artists in mid-motion.
Molly Spartan
Scottish women’s wrestling heavyweight legend with international fights under her belt, Molly Spartan has wrestled for Iron Girders, Insane Championship Wrestling and Ring of Honour.
Huntress (live soundtrack)
Frankie is a Filipina/Irish performance artist working with the mediums of movement, visual art and sound. Her work centres club culture where she believes in the possibility of sanctuary and protection for queer communities and uses dance and sound as a tool of transformation. She entered the Glasgow club scene in 2015 as a live performer and has evolved her practice to DJ, booker and producer under the name Huntress. She has played alongside artists Juliana Huxtable, Mykki Blanco and FKA Twigs as well as being a resident for Glasgow based night Ponyboy.
