Goblin Market
Drawing from the narrative poem Goblin Market by Christina Rosetti with its incredibly visceral, beautiful, and sensual descriptions of fruit, longing, and friendship, Chao-Ying and David will be exploring the intersections of disgust, queer desire and fetishisation through exploring new choreographies and using organic materials.

About the artist

Chao-Ying Rao (Femme Castratrice) is an East Asian visual artist based in Glasgow who primarily works with performance, photography, and moving image. Her practice involves negotiating the complexities around objectification and narcissism, often using humour as a tool to disarm and charm the viewer. Rao is interested in the absurdity of desire, excessive consumption, racial and bodily fetishisation, and abject femininity. Her background in dance comes from years of working as a stripper. Working with Kristeva’s theory of abjection and Creed’s monstrous feminine, her work plays with that fine line between attraction and repulsion. Rao will be collaborating with David Ronan for her TMS residency. David Ronan is an artist with a background in contemporary theatre and dance. Lately they are enjoying experimenting with commercial choreo and discovering photography. They are a member of Glasgow Prisoner Solidarity and are interested in learning about and spreading awareness of abolition. David studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and at Dance Inc Studio Centre.
